The Merchant of Venice Comes Alive at PACC

On the morning of May 19, 2026, the auditorium at FJR resonated with the magic of Shakespeare as the Pakistan American Cultural Center’s (PACC) English Language Program (ELP) staged an unforgettable performance of The Merchant of Venice by William Shakespeare.
Before a houseful audience of 230 guests, the students of the ELP—coming from diverse and humble backgrounds—embraced one of the greatest works of English literature with remarkable passion, dedication, and confidence. Their performance captivated the audience through powerful acting, heartfelt delivery, and an impressive command of the language, bringing Shakespeare’s timeless story vividly to life.
The production was further elevated by magnificent SMD screen backdrops that transported the audience to the enchanting streets of old Venice, the elegance of Portia’s home in Belmont, bustling marketplaces, lively tavern scenes, Jessica’s dramatic escape, and the unforgettable courtroom sequence. For one hour and eleven minutes, the audience was immersed in the fascinating world of 16th-century Shakespearean drama.
Guests, teachers, students, literature enthusiasts, and many first-time viewers of Shakespeare watched in awe as the novice cast delivered a performance marked by confidence and theatrical excellence. The production stood as a powerful reminder that talent, intelligence, and creativity are never limited by circumstance.
Among those who highly appreciated the performance were ELP Chairperson Syed Nusrat Ali- Executive Director-Muzaffar Arif Khan, Governing Board Member- Fatima Naqvi, esteemed guest-Abbas Husain, Directors of SPELT, ELP alumni, faculty, and lovers of literature.
The play was skillfully directed by ELP faculty members, Ambereen Islam and Andrea Lawrence, whose efforts brought the magic of theatre to life on stage. Produced under the leadership of Senior Manager, ELP-Merzieh Sherazi Shah, the performance reflected her passion for English Literature- especially- William Shakespeare.It portrayed a vision of language learning that extends beyond the classroom—creating opportunities for students to discover confidence, creativity, and their hidden potential.
