A Culture of Thinking in Every Class
By Mr. Abbas Husain (MD-Teachers Development Center)

Transform your classroom from a space of rote learning into a vibrant environment where deep engagement is the norm. This was a high-impact, three-hour workshop designed to provide educators with a practical toolkit for fostering intellectual curiosity.
On April 18th, 2026, at the PACC FJR Center, participants explored innovative strategies to elevate every interaction between teachers, students, and subject matter.
Abbas Husain holds a Masters Degree in English Literature, and an M.Ed. He is the HOD of the faculty of Arts & Sciences at AKU. He presented papers at the UNICEF regional conference, Kathmandu. He has trained over 88,000 teachers countrywide with special training programs for school leaders. In February, 2009,he was invited to attend the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington with President Obama as Chief Guest.
He conducted a highly engaging three-hour teachers’ workshop at PACC titled “A Culture of Thinking in Every Class,” bringing together 35 educators as part of the ELP initiative’s “Professional Edge” series aimed at enriching classroom practice and redefining the purpose of schooling.
Centered on the question of what schools are truly for, he challenged participants to move beyond rote learning toward thinking-centered classrooms, drawing on Harvard’s Project Zero to emphasize curiosity, critical thinking, and meaningful understanding.
A key highlight was his exploration of Ron Ritchart’s eight cultural forces—expectations, language, time, modeling, opportunities, routines, interactions, and environment—and how they can intentionally shape a culture of thinking. He also introduced the DSRP framework (Distinctions, Systems, Relationships, Perspectives) as the “DNA of thinking,” which participants actively applied in group tasks analyzing Urdu and English texts, including topics on Thatta and the declining leopard population in Pakistan.
Discussions on concepts like justice, fairness, and equality further deepened reflection. Concluding on an appreciative note, with a plaque presented by Ms. Fatima Naqvi and a bouquet for his wife, the workshop left participants inspired and set a strong foundation for future sessions in the Professional Edge series.
